Awhile ago i posted a mail with the question if any of the PR guys here were willing to write an article/make a presentation for amiGBG, but nobody volenteered.
Is anyone willing to take this upon him?
Cheers
I've been out of whack due to a recent forced period offline (while changing ISP from DSL to Cable Modem). I'd like to volunteer.

AmiGBG takes place on the 23th of July, so it should be done before that, preferably a week to 2 weeks sooner.

Hi everyone,
I've managed to put up a first draft of the article this morning.
A few notes: This is a first draft. I'm assuming here that the idea is to raise enough curiosity, in a brief article, to get people coming to our project and website, get them interested and get them helping as well. Also, I used the header graphic from amigaopenoffice.org since I had to resize it, it doesn't look as clear as it does on the website. Perhaps the original article can provide me with a bigger version of that graphic so it shows up clearer than this?
http://www.adaworld.com/AmiGBGArticleFirstDraft.pdf
Awaiting comments :-). Atleast now we got something to work with. in my opinion, it's not half bad at all I believe, but who knows perhaps there's different things I could mention to give it a bigger impact. :-) It might be great just the way it is too. So here it is and enjoy.
Note that when exporting this to HTML, some formatting is changed (almost as expected :-) but the overall look is there.
let me know what you think.

I think it's excellent. Well laid out, not too many words, eye-catching. A good balance. Are you going to include something along the lines of "We are starting by porting all the tools and utilities first"?
I did notice a lot of typos, though. I'd like to help by submitting a revised copy of the text. Would you like to send me the plain text and let me correct it for you?
cheers
Please do :-). And if some sentence formation can use improvement as well. I'm french natively. So some might think some sentence seem inversed just because in french the inverse form is our natural form of sentence. :-).
Attached is the plain text port of the document. Of course there's not formatting, if you can correct it and send it back so I can integrate the changes where they go :-). I would be much obliged. :-)

Indeed, I didn't mention this yet, just that there was tools and utilities to port as well. I'll correct that to say that we will first need to port those prior to porting OpenOffice itself.
Thanks for pointing that out :-)

To Tony: I've changed the document to reflect the porting of the tools and utilities prior to porting OpenOffice itself. Once I get the corrections from you and incorporated then I will generate a new pdf and upload it again for all to see.
To Mick Sutton: I would like to know when your next issue is planned to come out as well as the ultimate date I'll need to have the final version sent by. If the corrections I'll be getting from Tony are all that's needed I'll send you the final version in any format you wish to have it :-) Just let me know.

Ok since I haven't seen my other post appear (in the last 1/2 hour), I'm reposting this, just in case. :-).
I have done a second draft with all the corrections so far brought forth by Tony Wyatt. Here's the last draft.
http://www.adaworld.com/amiGBGArticleSecondDraft.pdf
Now if I could get that original Logo from AmigaOpenOffice.org in a bigger format, it would appear much clearer in the article. :-)

I hate to say this but it looks like a full page infomercial. It would be helpful to mention what progress has been made so far. Tools and utilities are mentioned as being needed before the actual porting can start. Tell the reader what some of those tools are and what we have at this time plus maybe what is in progress. Also, mention what codebase is going to be ported. May want to mention that Java is one of the componets and about JAmiga. Oh, the last paragraph has Amiga Open OFfice.org. Other than that it's a good general overview of the project, how to get involved and where to get more info. I think some of this should make it to the website. Along with additional information. Such as what need to be done short term (like the supporting tools and utils), what has been completed, what is in progress. Who are the current active members of the project. What version is the port aimed at.

Since I'm at home and don't have all the previous emails in this thread in the webmail, I'm replying to this one even though this isn't _directly_ related...
Anyway, is there any chance that we can set up a table? It costs 7 EUR, but I can sponsor that. We do need more than one person to be there, though. So who except me can come?

Awesome. Well, then we have ample opportunities for coordinating what to say and to whom.
I'm thinking of not only how to reply to questions like "when?" (you two have a lot of experience with that one, so if I just holler "YOU ASK ME WHEN?" you guys could chime in with "WHEN IT'S DONE!" every time someone asks :-P ), but also "what can I do to help?", then it's good to have someone there who knows the source and dependencies. I'll be completely (100%, it'll be impossible to reach me in ANY way even for my family and coworkers ;-) ) out of the loop the three last weeks before the show, unless I accidentally manage to check mail on a web cafe once or twice. I'm not planning to, though.
I'll help people get on the mailing list if they want to, though. We can do it at the show, if there's a machine nearby for surfing. I won't be bringing with me ANYTHING AT ALL.
So shall I book a table?
PS: I guess you're flying RyanAir? Gotta love that company, even though they seem to be hiring a lot of pimply faced youths... A _small_ training course in logistics for the stewardesses etc wouldn't go amiss...
PPS: Remember that I'm also just a RyanAir away, if you guys need a vacation later in the summer (but I guess it's hard to beat the Mosel valley in the summer, grumf...)

I guess that's for Christophe to answer. I will definitely not be able to be at the table, since I'll have to hold seminars and speeches and all that stuff.

Couldn't afford a real airline, anyway ;)

Yes, they made flying affordable, really. With RyanAir, I pay 320 bucks for two there and back again, with Lufthansa, it's 2000 euro... go figure... At that price, I even accept the pimply faced youths... Although I have to say the last time I went to London with them, the stewardess was extremely cute...

Depends... There's one major drawback here, and that's the high summer temperatures. On summer days, it can get well over 40 degrees with a high moisture. In fact, this here vally used to be a training ground for soldiers going to tropical battlefields, because of the similar weather. Since I personally don't like too hot weather (nothing beats a slight breeze from the sea or from the mountains), it's sometimes very hard to bear ...

Well, we have a few weeks to go yet :-) But as I said, I'll be out of the loop the last three weeks before the show. Kinda "Emerald forest" like, if you will. After years and years (weeks, anyway) the young man suddenly stands in the middle of a city trying to figure out what the heck has been happening while he was gone.

I can hold the fort, no problem. I'll ask them how early they need to know. I think they'll be just glad to have more exhibitors, really.

Ah. Well, Sandefjord in early August is as near as perfect as anything can be, then. Sunny and hot enough, but being next to the ocean it's quite nice.

And they ARE interested in more exhibitors, and the table is semi-booked. Me and Mattias Karlsson will be sharing a table. He'll be pushing flyers for AmigaRulez, I'll be pushing flyers for this project. He'll do the arrangements, I'll pay for the table (most likely in beer, but that's a completely different story).
We need to complete the plans from our side before I leave on vacation. I'll be online twice in July, but no more. And I'll be FAR from home, so don't tell me to bring something two days before the show ;-)

I'm not going to bring with me 20kg of paper on a bicycle for 3 weeks, if that's what you mean. I was thinking of leeching off of Mattias the last couple of days before the show. I'll want to have everything ready for when I visit him the 3rd, then the 21st I hope he'll have arranged everything we need. I'm sure I can handle the cost. I'll check if he knows a place we can get color prints done as well. Maybe it's worth it :-P
For now, could we concentrate on MAKING the dang flyers/posters? Let me worry about printing and distribution. I'll pick up the bill. If his last name is Buck I'll even throw him in the river for no extra cost.

It has come to my attention that some of you aren't using YAM and this has been causing confusion as I had a different email address in "reply-to"
Anyway, the rest of you have missed an interesting discussion with Chris Ochal, who has clearly never tasted Real Ale, which produced the conclusion that we *need* CUPS, even if it's far from perfect.
Thomas Frieden had this to add about Turboprint, and I reproduce the comments in full here as they (a) made me laugh and (b)sum up the situation nicely.
"I'm not so convined about that. For one, TurboPrint is not openly available, and to the best of my knowledge, it hits the exec memory lists directly. Exec memory lists are evil and must be destroyed. The memory system I'm working on right now doesn't use them anymore (and as a result, it's doing constant time memory allocation in the average case, and is practically fragmentation free).
Besides, I'm not really content with the printing system as it is now. Basically, we have in AmigaOS a separation between screen graphics and printer graphics. This is artificial, and should be avoided. For the future, we're looking into alternatives.
While I'm still all for CUPS, this does give food for thought.
You won't find many alternatives to CUPS, sadly."

Ok, external dependencies of sal:
None, it seems. It's really just very basic functionality:
- sockets - threads - IPC (semaphores, mutexes, condition variables) - file handling - directory handling (creating, changing, scanning) - atomic memory access
All of that is pretty basic. My pthread library already handles threads and it's IPC, minus the semaphores (which are not part of the POSIX model), but that should be easy to build.
Bottom line, this can be started, and should be started, ASAP. I'm going to make a full list of stuff that needs to be implemented.

Hi Chris,
This weekend, I am wiaiting for some numbers on the current stage of development, anda few other things. Those will be in the article too. I think it should look like an infomercial, well as long as we're emphasizing the right part of the deal so to speak. I'm not trying to sell the idea, or get financial sponsors per se. But I am trying to sell the importance of this project, the usefulness it can have to all Amiga users, the impact on the Amiga community etc etc...
I'll have a 2nd page to fill in, so there will be plenty of space to add those tools and other relevant information. There is a 3rd draft (which it seems you haven't seen) most of the minor mistakes like that Amiga Open OFfice have been fixed in the 3rd draft).

It most certainly is, I'm unable to perform the translation however as I don't speak or write Italian unfortunately. However if you want to make the translation (once it's proofread) I'd be more than happy that you publicize it. If you do translate, if you could send me the translation so I can learn a bit of italian in the process, I'd be much obliged :-).

I reckon this list is polyglot enough for translation to be possible in nearly every instance (except possibly from Basque or Finnish ;) )

I would be most honored :-). The more presence we can have, the better. Thank you very much and by all means please do :-).
I have contacted Robert Williams (the editor) to let him know we are going to run this article. When you have a proof read finished article either submit it to me or Robert editor@totalamiga.org and we will make sure it is included in the next issue of the magazine (around 600 regular readers).

I've managed to put up a first draft of the article this morning.
Would you like this to appear in the next issue (free of charge0 of Total Amiga magazine http://www.totalamiga.org ?
We would only be too happy to publish it there :-)
That would be nice, yea, but i'd like to give the "exclusive" to AmiGBG, if that's fine with you.

Hi Ochal,
It's my mistake here, I didn't know that you wanted exclusivity to a particular magazine when the other magazines contacted me. Because of the role of the article I simply "assumed" that visibility was was main goal. I'm also assuming that in most cases each magazine have their reader base that may or may not overlap with each other. In that light, I wanted to make the article as visible as it could be. so we get more visibility and ultimately more help :-). I thought that AmiGBG was a first gateway to reaching visibility, not the only one :-) atleast as per our talks. I was happy for the article, and the project that the other magazines wanted to publish the article. Guess that should have been a detail that could have been discussed yesterday :-). I apoligize for this burst of exposure I wanted to create :-)
But I did write the article for you, for the project, and you are the "higher" authority which I most definitaly intend to respect to its fullest. The article is done, you have the final word on what to do with it :-). I would like to ask that atleast the italian translation for the bitplane magazine be authorized since it's a different language :-).
You have my explanation, and my reasons. :-) I will respect the final word on this.

Hey, no need to apologise, i should've mentioned it earlier, and i do want the article in the mags, but after amiGBG, it gives amiGBG something to attract extra people, that's all.

It will happen after amigbg ;)

Stop groveling! If there's one thing i can't stand it's people groveling (that concludes the mandatory Monty Python quote :P)
Besides, the article isn't done yet! :D Still need to get you some extra material to put into it ;)
