OpenOffice for the Amiga? How can you help? About 7 months ago, a group of dedicated programmers, editors, project organizers and others have joined forces to create a project to port the world renouned OpenOffice.org Applications to the Amiga platform. Beginning a project of this size is quite the undertaking and one that shouldn't be just thrown out. A great deal of organization and attention to every little detail to bring such a project to it's success. The current team assembled so far seems to cover all these grounds quite well. As with any projects of this size, the number of people helping in this project will directly affect the time at which the project will be ready. We thought you'd never ask. As I mentionned above, the time required for the completion of this port is directly proportional to the number of individual involved. Your help is needed. If you have atleast a few hours a week you can contribute to this effort, please see below on where and now you can learn more about the project and how you can help. The projects needs the following type of individuals. Software Developers: To help with all parts of the different development projects and phases. The main language will be C++. Technical Document Writers: To help with all documentation that will be required throughout the project as well as adapting the OpenOffice.org documentation itself to reflect Amiga specific functionalities Web Developers: Some parts of the projects use php and other web related technologies such as XML. And those parts must be ported as well. Once again if you have any expertise in one of these fields please don't hesitate to get in touch with us and see how you can help. What is the plan? Where can I learn more? The current plans are the porting of the 4 major applications that make up the OpenOffice.org to the Amiga OS 4.0 platform while keeping things as compatible as possible to OS 3.9 plateform. These are: Writer: The word processor with all the bells and whistles one could expect from a sophisticated word processing application. Calc: The spreadsheet program filled with all the more advanced features that make spreadsheet operations as easy as can be. Draw: The vector graphics drawing and design program designed with the professional artist in mind. Impress: The full fledged presentation software package that allows to create the most advanced presentation Note that this also involves thje porting of a full range of related libraries and tools that helps OpenOffice.org perform it's functionalities. Also some programming languages will be ported/adapted for the task. There are many places where you can learn more about this project.
