Hello, I'd like to propose that in an effort to get a bit better organised, that we should start putting together a website. I'm not talking about a pretty look-at-us-we've-got-a-logo-and-cool-project-name site, but rather something that we can use to document decisions and developer info, a single point of reference. Even though nothing has yet started, I would like to get into the habit now, with research and organisational issues. I'm putting myself forward to help get this off the ground. -- Thanks, Andy Hall

Pre-organisatorial note.

Quick note, Before we get _too_ organised, I would like to insert a quick note. A number of messages back someone suggested we divide the OOo source into subprojects, but before we do this we probably ought to look at the dependencies. If OOo requires Neon, then "Neon" is probably a good subproject to begin with, not "OOo WebDAV". Some things like might be ported, other replaced, but all in all the best subproject to begin with might be "OOo dependencies". Oh, and my AW nick is "Tesla" (unobviously :). -Peter aka. People are allowed to join early to get the chit-chat out of the way), and then we have some bits that are political and some that are technical, so I think everyone should try to stop by to at least listen in. Between those two timestamps we have at least 11 people who have said they can. Unfortunately more or less only Europeans. The offshorians didn't assemble enough troups to shift the decision. If they could still lurk and maybe make the occasional comment that would be nice. Otherwise there really isn't that much I can do. Add to this a couple of people who said "any time", and a lot of lurkers. Those who can't between these hours are unlucky, because the next-best choice basically has one australian, 3 americans, myself and one person who said he'd be there anyway ;-) (it was from 3AM Friday morning European time). Hope we'll see a few people there, for a fruitful discussion. Welcome :-) -- We'll double-cross that bridge when we get there.

Mission statement.

I corrected the spelling and capitalisation of the mission statment (removing a castrated ram, among other things :-) - "OpenOffice.org" instead of "OpenOffice.Org" - "AROS" instead of "Aros" - "whether" instead of "wether" (which is a castrated ram, just so you know) - "she" instead of "he" (The last one is, as far as I have come to understand a bit ambigous, a human being is feminine, but a person is masculine unless female. Organising people.

I would like to insert a quick note about the problems organising people over different time-zones and by way of a mailing list. In addition to the fact that some read their mail more seldom than others, there is the fact that a backlog of mail will quickly build up when you do not read your mail. Taking care of a 50-mail backlog takes both a bit of time and effort in addition to making it easy to forget to reply to a mail. We will have to learn to communicate efficiently as well as we try to organise. At least we have a head honcho now, but there is still much to do and there will undoubtedly be many false starts. I asked this earlier, before I knew about the voting, : Does anyone have any pertinent questions, concerns, or other issues they feel should be addressed in the opening contact or follow ups? Now you can post them here to the list if you think it need to be discussed, but I think they should be directed to the poor sod we elect. I just want to make sure we have all the bases covered and be a thorough as possible.

Wiki?

All, Just a thought here, but as there's already the beginning of discussion on porting pre-requisites and the like, a wiki might be a good idea, if anyone is able to get one set up quickly...can be used to pull the 'meat' out of the current list that will need to be updated in coming weeks/months. I'm not a fan of using wikis 'for everything,' but they're great for a group sharing data that changes... Comments/not possible/have one/etc? Scott

Intro

Hey all, Here's an 'official intro'... Interested in contributing to the project, although I expect the capacity to vary a bit based on my paid job schedule, as well as getting up to speed on AOS development after 'forever' away from it. I've worked as a paid developer for > 8 years, as well as a sysadmin, and have done build/release engineering as well as some PM work. Languages of choice are C and C++, and have done a good amount of cross-platform development, primarily in the *nix world and unfortunately, Windows. Other languages include SQL, shell, Java, Python.. I've worked with most flavors of *nix, Solaris since Solaris 2.5.1, Linux since pre 1.0 kernel days. Add HP-UX, AIX, IRIX, and others as I've been 'forced to.' Stared out on TRS-80, Pet, Apple, (first 3 'borrowed'), VIC-20, Atari 400, then a handful of Amigas before going into the US military, where I ironically wound up working on databases, then leaving and getting a degree in CS and 'starting real work' ;-) Most dev work has been back-end (server side or writing to system APIs like POSIX and win32 API), no GUI- although I've got a bit of HCI and know 'what makes a good UI,' I just never got into that part of development...current 'preferred platforms' are basically anything not Windoze..FreeBSD, Gentoo Linux, Solaris are 'personal use', and trying to like Mac OS X currently, although I'm not sure how that one will pan out (looks like they took a perfectly good Unix and broke it so far :-( ) Currently have a uA1 on order, am told it'll be a week or two to have in hand (finally?). Work schedule changes daily lately, but am under the gun for the next few weeks or so, more than likely...after that, things may ease up a bit. I'll be starting basically back at square one for AOS development, so will have to spend some time doing that once my uA1 comes up, but whatever I can do in the meantime I'll certainly try to. I mentioned to Olegil that if an rsync mirror is needed for any of the project's work, I should be able to supply that on RAID disk...either the entire repository/website can be replicated, or just the source tree, whichever. The connection wouldn't be fast enough for anything else, at ~384k, but more than fast enough for a backup or for source control, defect tracking, or the like. That system would likely be a dual PIII FreeBSD box, which should be able to run any tools if any are needed. I've no overwhelming urge to become a PM as my paid work is 'enough' for right now, but if/when leads are needed for 'other than head honcho' for specific tasks, I could probably help out in that area until I can get AOS coding up to speed...
