It occurs to me, as I struggle to set up my brand-new Canon Pixma MP780 (how can anyone collect so many non-working telephone cables?) that if we're going to have a decent office suite on the Amiga we're logically also in need of a decent selection of up-to-date printer drivers . Is anyone aware of any such project, even if it's only porting the linux drivers? There's rumours about Turboprint, but no actual announcements...
Unofficially, there are issues with parallel printing. Some can make it work from applications, but I've had no such luck. There is a setup problem with the parallel port but it only affects some printers and cables (most, I think). If you are lucky with your choices, it will work.
Both my Epson Sylus Photo 790 and Canon i560 worked well with A1/OS4/Turboprint combination connected via the parallel port.
OTOH, Turboprint works well with a USB printer. It has drivers for many printers and the newly released Update 3 for OS4 includes the highly esteemed USBprinter.device.
Have been running with the USB printer connection for a couple of months now (I'm a beta tester) and it worked well from the very off ;-) Now I feel that parallel port conection is a thing of the past :-)
I have heard some say that Turboprint works with parallel printers, too. Not my experience, but then, I always was a bit strange.
Yes it works fine with parallel port connected printers, using Turboprint 7.60 here.
